Our own Laurie Ashbourne will be manning a booth at this year's event. Stop by to say howdy and see what we have cooking!</p><p>Other than that it's all quiet on the Midwestern front. Mostly. </p><p>We are making as much noise as we possibly can to remind people to vote, posting links on how to, and shedding light on voter suppression. (This 2019 video shows how hard it is to vote in oppressed voting districts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03DGjnIkTdI)</p><p>We are also supporting the NRDC (National Resources Defense Council) to block legislation that opens wild and protected lands to logging and mining. At the forefront are:</p><p>Tongass National Forest: </p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>The current admin wants to open up nearly HALF (9 million acres) of the Forest to logging. The Tongass Forest has been called North America's Rain Forest. And after all of the good fights it's time for a movie!</div><div><br /></div><div>Until our next quarterly (or bi-annual) update, be well, stay safe, watch a movie, have a cupcake, find happiness, and VOTE!</div><div><br /></div><p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Scratches and Scribbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05023695175772528218noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4425785764062440583.post-56215917588924470822019-11-27T18:24:00.002-08:002019-11-27T18:26:47.409-08:00Meanwhile ...<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It's that time of year; our sometimes-semi-annual blog entry so you can delve into our exciting lives. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Let's catch up, shall we?</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">After months of looking at the big dirt patch that was our back yard we finally got some new drainage and landscaping done. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">And thank you, Great Clips. I got another non-descript haircut and am now starting to look like the old guy on the Quaker Oats logo. Witness: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<img src="https://blog.lucilleroberts.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Quaker-Oats-Logo.jpg" /></div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Meanwhile ...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0755303/" target="_blank">Laurie Ashbourne</a> (our producing partner for Midnight Swing!) has a deliciously creepy Halloween tale set for release in October 2020. Eli Roth is set to direct. </span><br />
<a href="https://movieweb.com/10-31-eli-roth-slasher-movie"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">https://movieweb.com/10-31-eli-roth-slasher-movie</span></a><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2150282/" target="_blank">Micky Shiloah</a> and I have determined we are slightly insane (and realistically, possibly brain-damaged) to still want to be in this business. And so we are developing a millennial musical comedy based on one of his songs that I strongly feel should be a showstopper on Broadway. But no. He wants a movie musical feature. And I'm nuts enough to go along with it. But I love this song so much. And he's an all-around good dude, too. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">My one and only Neal has been gigging with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Columbus-Soul-and-Salvage-733145327029069" target="_blank">Columbus Soul and Salvage</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Musician/Neal-Havener-Music-and-Art-391462461388373/" target="_blank">The Neal Show</a> bands. Each are of different ilks. Both are a romping good time. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">But our biggest news! We captured (then adopted) two feral cats that were born under a dumpster in downtown Columbus. If anyone wants details on how to capture a feral at night in wintry sleet and rain, please let me talk you out of it. Here are our boys, Bug and Hopper. Once malnourished and near freezing they are now fat and sassy. To our knowledge, they are the only survivors of their 6-kitty litter.</span><br />

We are still engaged with follow-ups at the time of this entry. Stay tuned to see where we are in another few months!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Addendum: Because I work at a library I thought I would share a few titles of books I've read this past year and highly recommend. They are not necessarily "new" books. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1. <i>Arctic Solitaire: A Boat, A Bay, and the Quest for the Perfect Bear</i> by Paul Souders is a true story; riveting and hilarious. </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I could not get enough of this book. </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I'm not fond of the cold but this seriously made me want to head off to Alaska. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2. <i>Beartown: A Novel</i> by Fredrik Backman. It's like Friday Night Lights - only with ice hocky. And crime. It's a brilliant page-turner. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">3. <i>American Wolf: A True Story of Survival and Obsession in the West</i> by Nate Blakeslee may very well change your life. I was profoundly moved by this fascinating story and am ready for another trek out to Yellowstone because of it. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

We interrupt our irregularly scheduled posting to share this zesty, kick-ass Southwest Corn Salad with you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/giuuCqb422I/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/giuuCqb422I?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But if you really, really, truly want to know what else has been going on with our Hollywood dabblings, kick back and relax for a 60-second read.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>1.</b> I spent a lovely week speaking with Bohemia Group about Midnight Swing after they read it, "flipped for it" (their words) and and got me on the phone. We talked development stuff: characters, story threads, other sexy stuff. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the end, they struggled for 2 days before they decided to pass on our little swing-era confection. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I indulged in a whole row of Nutter Butters to take the sting out of that one.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>2.</b> Another co has asked to read Blood Land. That was 2 weeks ago. Insert CRICKETS CHIRPING here. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>3.</b> If you visit imdbPro you will see that the uber-talented Ron Mason (Avengers: Infinity War) and Vanessa Nirode (Boardwalk Empire) are officially listed as part of the Midnight Swing team: <a href="https://pro.imdb.com/title/tt5235842/filmmakers">https://pro.imdb.com/title/tt5235842/filmmakers</a> -- so at least we know the cast will be dressed to the nines and the art direction will be spectacular. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We promise if we get funding that the craft services will consist of more than Funyuns and Twizzlers. Maybe we'll add this most excellent Southwest Corn Salad to the mix. Would you like that? Would you?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Feeling all alone on a Saturday night bc my man is down in Nelsonville at the big music fest and I had to work today. So I'm going to contact Maisie Williams' reps in the UK and pitch Midnight Swing. What have I got to lose? YAAAY! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And this pic has nothing to do w my Hollywood ramblings but I found it in a pile of memorabilia, so now I'm getting personal. </span><br />

It's the tail end of summer 2017 and we have a few scripts out and about with folks in tinsel town who may or may not have the means to move things forward.<br />
<br />
In spite of dipping a toe into the sparkling pools of Hollywood I'm more aware than ever of the smoke and mirrors.<br />
<br />
Big Studios are selling. China is buying -- and then backing out. Deals are not being met or honored and everyone from the indies to the old suits are scrambling for production dollars while SVOD runs away with the silver spoon.<br />
<br />
Hollywood is crumbling before our very eyes. Will it be the next Camelot; For one brief shining moment?<br />
<br />
Does any of this sugar-spun fantasy really matter when half a world away a woman holds her child who is all sticks and bones while they wait for Cholera to finish them off ?<br />
<br />
Do we hang on to the sparkling Hollywood dream while mass atrocities are being carried out in South Sudan -- or while 12 million people are uprooted from their homes from the Iraq/Syrian clashes? The Kurdish and Palestinians and a number of other refugees living on this earth are on a forced march to find a home. Tensions are escalating between hot-headed leaders in need of education and an ego-check.<br />
<br />
With all that's going on I have to ask myself what good is a movie?<br />
<br />
A screenplay?<br />
<br />
A story?<br />
<br />
My answer: <br />
<br />
It's everything.<br />
<br />
Stories help us communicate. They preserve our past and help us face what may lie ahead.<br />
<br />
A story can:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Lift us out of despair</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Spark hope</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Ignite a revolution</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Inspire us to be our better selves</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Relate to us so we know we're not alone in the world</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Bridge cultures</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Scare us or warn us</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Make us laugh</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Help us dream</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Help us understand</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Shed light</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Give us a journey to another world</li>
</ul>
<br />
And no matter the message, we dream spinners cling to Aristotle's words of wisdom. To paraphrase: Art, above all else, must entertain.<br />
<br />
If we must live in a world where extreme groups exist, where bullets fly, where mines blow up innocent people and animals, where people are being pushed out of their homes, one small spark of an idea, shared on a page or a screen, may give us pause long enough to help enlighten the world through our shared human experiences.<br />
<br />
Is a story necessary?<br />
<br />
No.<br />
<br />
Water. Food. Air. Shelter. Those are necessary to survive.<br />
<br />
But stories make your life soar.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This week we celebrated Valentine's Day with chocolate-covered cranberries that we ate during intermission at the Ballet. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Much to my enchantment I found one stuck to my face when we arrived home.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHeH79gt8VmEIU_EFXMRt6fvAhsDhMybChbqeCF3r8_6K46k8a7va-HNqGJuqjkDLhLWkNU8nQrWxl4-C4vmI8wCRrfd5O4XoCVc-Shxy7URhJzB-8g-ckBWRfJbQJU9t5yqmmRCyPNso/s1600/candy+chocolates.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHeH79gt8VmEIU_EFXMRt6fvAhsDhMybChbqeCF3r8_6K46k8a7va-HNqGJuqjkDLhLWkNU8nQrWxl4-C4vmI8wCRrfd5O4XoCVc-Shxy7URhJzB-8g-ckBWRfJbQJU9t5yqmmRCyPNso/s200/candy+chocolates.jpg" width="200" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In <i>other </i>news, I had a lovely chat with the very talented Michael Lloyd - the man behind the Dirty Dancing soundtrack album. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"></span>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> We discussed music for <a href="http://www.prettyegg.org/midnightswing" target="_blank">Midnight Swing</a> and how it's just as much a character as all the other roles.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We want a musical arc that's <span style="color: magenta;"><b>sexy</b></span>, <b><span style="color: red;">sizzling</span></b> and <span style="color: blue;"><b>vibrant</b></span> up front ... and ending with more of a gritty, bluesy feel to mirror what the characters go through in the story.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Can I just say how giddy I am with this idea?</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I can't let this opp go by without a shout-out to my producing partner for Midnight Swing, Ms. <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0755303" target="_blank">Laurie Ashbourne Sacks</a>, for being selected as one of eight filmmakers for Stage 32's European Co-production Matchmaking Program. I'm over the moon about this and will be watching, following and posting news as it trickles in!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Other notables among friends include <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1289173/" target="_blank">Nolan Gerard Funk</a> in an outstanding portrayal of a motherless would-be killer on ABC's Quantico and upcoming recurring guest role on Counterpart (Starz).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And in a surprise stumbling-upon moment we discovered that our friend <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2150282/" target="_blank">Micky Shiloah</a> (HBO's West World) will be making an appearance in Ohio ... on screen at a film festival in Marietta, Ohio (a most picturesque river town). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And what are <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1571731/" target="_blank">Neal</a> and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1422935/" target="_blank">I</a> doing?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We are contemplating really important life decisions ... like whether or not to get new carpeting.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And Neal is in the studio bellowing out whimsical lyrics </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">over</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and over</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and over</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and over</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">again ...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and I'm in the next room over so forgive me </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">if I start typing words like "Neptune Head" in this blog entry. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>

Scratches and Scribbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05023695175772528218noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4425785764062440583.post-9714883098679235512016-10-04T05:53:00.001-07:002016-10-04T05:54:39.998-07:00What's cooking at Pretty Egg?<br />
<br />
We entertained a niece for the summer<br />
<br />
lost our swimming pool (first world problems, so sad)<br />
<br />
battled termites<br />
<br />
and entered into a screenwriting collaboration with the talented Mr. Sean Brosnan.<br />
<br />
Sean's feature film, My Father Die, has been collecting electric reviews and distribution so we're excited about this new endeavor. You can see the trailer for My Father Die at various places on the web, or right here:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG50sFm4tOE">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG50sFm4tOE</a><br />
<br />
,,, but be warned; there is plenty of adult content so this is not for the weak of heart,<br />
<br />
Keeping with the dark side, we're happy to report that our screenplay, <i><a href="http://prettyegg.org/scaredtodeath.html" target="_blank">Scared to Death</a></i>, is under option with 523 Productions. They're looking at a shoot in Massachusetts sometime next Spring/Summer.<br />
<br />
All this darkness! Is there anything sugary and light about us?<br />
<br />
There is indeed! While horror is not my cup of tea I strive as a writer to create great content no matter what the genre. I'm a true Mary Poppins by nature and love puppies and kitties way more than slaughter fests. My screenplay for <i><a href="http://prettyegg.org/rainingcats.html" target="_blank">Raining Cats </a> </i>placed in the finals (top 10) of this year's StoryPros Screenwriting Competition. <br />
<br />
If only the world wanted such a story. Sigh.<br />
<br />

Well! The excitement never ends around here at Pretty Egg Productions.<br />
<br />
Today, we got flu shots!<br />
<br />
An hour later I got a haircut ... so I can continue to look like a deranged version of Buster Brown.<br />
<br />
Witness: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3HJbos0MII9SfluEul3wvv4BYcwDfCGWglFD2jffgH3f1RHGGhLc4-kqhGWKE0mIKusqMrLbcqOQqcCU14z0uWgzk4W1WENuzL1JwfD-_jGYSL8DzPxrQz26TKXUcZpXMeOLsr0lpiW4/s1600/buster+brown.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3HJbos0MII9SfluEul3wvv4BYcwDfCGWglFD2jffgH3f1RHGGhLc4-kqhGWKE0mIKusqMrLbcqOQqcCU14z0uWgzk4W1WENuzL1JwfD-_jGYSL8DzPxrQz26TKXUcZpXMeOLsr0lpiW4/s320/buster+brown.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
In other news, we received an option offer on the thriller <a href="http://www.prettyegg.org/scaredtodeath" target="_blank">Scared to Death</a>, 523 Productions and Laura Willoughby producing. They may not have a budget yet but they do have a little press popping up in some interesting places.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://horrorfuel.com/horror/movies/movie-news/523-productions-picks-horror-thriller-scared-death/">http://horrorfuel.com/horror/movies/movie-news/523-productions-picks-horror-thriller-scared-death/</a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.scaretissue.com/523-productions-options-scared-to-death-script/">http://www.scaretissue.com/523-productions-options-scared-to-death-script/</a><br />
<br />
Scary stories aside, we also have a little sugar and love from a few contests for the screenplay "<a href="http://www.prettyegg.org/rainingcats" target="_blank">Raining Cats</a>." Funny, everyone wants the mean thrillers - but we hold out hope for this little tale about a girl and her many cat rescues. It seems the world could use more of this kind of story right now. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.prettyegg.org/midnightswing" target="_blank">Midnight Swing</a> updates include a request from reps for Director Michael Caton Jones (This Boy's Life, Rob Roy). We're told he's about to start shooting so no idea when we may hear back -- but the stars seem a little brighter here in Ohio tonight.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more ..<br />

<br />
Loss.<br />
Life. <br />

<br />
We were also giddily surprised when our short movie<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Where has our summer gone?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was spent learning Humility. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yes, Humility w a capital H.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Witness our cheezoid poster for a cheesier movie that doesn't quite work: </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But we lick our wounds and move on</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">(although we kinda like the poster).</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On a happier note, the summer was fruitful in other ways. We indulged in a super fun day of shooting the boys in the band; a sizzle reel for Midnight Swing!</span></div>

Wow. Where have we been the past several months?<br />
<br />
We've taken an unexpected break from our Hollywood dreams and dabblings to tend to family matters. The passing of parents and the job of acting as an executor of an estate demands that you put your own life on hold.<br />
<br />
This sad excursion has given us a chance to (momentarily) wipe the stars out of our eyes. <br />
<br />
Now that we have some closure on the business side of that journey we're dipping our parched toe back into the waters. But maybe water isn't the best metaphor now that the rest of the world can see the damage from the ongoing drought in sunny California.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrne4BLnWYe0bmPwkytxJ3AytADd97i-bcfKwOlBs8suYPeXF7sO8dGt5Ij_YiJhXCLUB7ESDbBQpnbl9CAMMB0o7IqHZ_d4mh8SwQPYhcxwMlMh1nSfT-8Zo5cbwYET6WglCH6GbbyFs/s1600/CA+drought.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrne4BLnWYe0bmPwkytxJ3AytADd97i-bcfKwOlBs8suYPeXF7sO8dGt5Ij_YiJhXCLUB7ESDbBQpnbl9CAMMB0o7IqHZ_d4mh8SwQPYhcxwMlMh1nSfT-8Zo5cbwYET6WglCH6GbbyFs/s400/CA+drought.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Look. It's a desert, folks. Water has been re-routed and piped in for decades so Hollywood can keep up the lush facade.<br />
<br />
An actor friend of ours who lives and works in LA sometimes talks about the biz sucking his soul dry. But that's what you get when you live in a desert town.<br />
<br />
The desert will win. It will eventually claim what it was meant to claim ... no matter how often you sweep the sand off your porch.<br />
<br />
I have a prediction that there will be a mass exodus from CA to the Ohio River Valley area - where green things grown naturally from the abundance of fresh water lakes and rivers. Where earthquakes are minimal to non-existent and where the cost of living is 40% less.<br />
<br />
I have a feeling that Hollywood will move its studios to this side of the Mississippi. If I'm wrong, the beautiful people of Hollywood will be trapped inside their bubble surrounded by the ever-encroaching desert while they sip wine under the smog ... I mean stars.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, we Cowtowners will continue to enjoy our film industry boom in Beautiful Ohio. <br />
<br />
Thank you, technology (and fresh lake and river water).<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: purple;"><b><span style="color: #0b5394;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: purple;">In other news ... </span><span></span></span></span></b></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #0b5394;">We're in development with Anova Pictures for our thriller Blood Land. </span></li>
<span style="color: #0b5394;">
</span></ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #0b5394;">Getting back in the swing of things with our Midnight Swing package.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #0b5394;">Considering a request to produce the hip-hop feature Groove Shack. </span></li>
</ul>
<ul><span style="color: #0b5394;">
</span>
<li><span style="color: #0b5394;">... and we're in the mad and merry process of a film contest through MOFA (Mid Ohio Filmmakers Association). We were lucky enough to get assigned the genre of Space Opera. Our team is stoked, the script is being hashed out and some awesome locations have already been secured. So ends Day 1 of this contest.</span></li>
</ul>
Stay tuned for more Cowtown news as we dance on the periphery of the Hollywood bubble<br />
(um ... at least until that well runs dry). <br />

It's the first day of 2015.<br />
<br />
Our heater broke down and it's 21° outside.<br />
<br />
No problem. A nice man is here fixing it.<br />
<br />
But we have to pay him extra for holiday pay.<br />
<br />
It seems to be taking longer to fix than we thought. <br />
<br />
No matter. Our stove still works.<br />
<br />
See? I made a teddy bear pancake while wearing my winter coat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibjeHoZlhwttHgHlxmeLvU5YQuNL7A20-UV4sbMA8aG4Nhid-iGXFlfj9Q2FJViCzyjwxCJ_gJwNcFWNACPWqHO9x-_USndfw0rULxUZXe0AcuMs74JXPfly3dvkzIy1tNFINKUejCUEI/s1600/bear+pancake+raw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibjeHoZlhwttHgHlxmeLvU5YQuNL7A20-UV4sbMA8aG4Nhid-iGXFlfj9Q2FJViCzyjwxCJ_gJwNcFWNACPWqHO9x-_USndfw0rULxUZXe0AcuMs74JXPfly3dvkzIy1tNFINKUejCUEI/s1600/bear+pancake+raw.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then I flipped it and broke it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1bzqKHER9RLxjFdmecpu6DwHU0GOVUac1EhQPUC4KXF-5_e3w4Ts_Gcv0xuSvb3MO3UB3mvDgGvfDuaXKOKWlvvC4RMSHjAWF5uP_IPViOJrJcaB0wakFvBuP-UdwDY_5CUvlEoy9MPc/s1600/bear+pancake+mushed+(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1bzqKHER9RLxjFdmecpu6DwHU0GOVUac1EhQPUC4KXF-5_e3w4Ts_Gcv0xuSvb3MO3UB3mvDgGvfDuaXKOKWlvvC4RMSHjAWF5uP_IPViOJrJcaB0wakFvBuP-UdwDY_5CUvlEoy9MPc/s1600/bear+pancake+mushed+(1).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I probably don't have a point to make and none of this will enlighten anyone or make the world a better place -- but I feel the need to ramble on a bit about movie stars.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A few short weeks ago Variety put out a piece entitled
<i>Movie Stars Have Become an Endangered
Species</i>. Over on Stage 32 there’s a huge discussion on whether the era of
the movie star is over. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So what is it that makes us plop down our $10-17 for a movie ticket in this day and age
when our world is full of economic woes? Is it the star or the story? Or is it
smart marketing?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When I was younger it was 50/50 with me. I loved
certain movie stars. Most teens do. I
would gladly spend my babysitting money on a ticket to see the stars. But I
also saw Jaws over and over again. No stars. Just one terrifying shark.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These days, if there's a Wes Anderson, Alexander
Payne or Guy Maddin film I'll be there. I have to say that reviews will also
get me in a seat. I may never have seen Asghar Farhadi's excellent "A
Separation" had it not been for all the glowing reviews. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Recently, though, too many editorials and thought
pieces are heralding the news that we are witnessing the death of the movie
star. I reluctantly agree. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here's why.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Arguably, the most glamorous year for Hollywood was
1939. Hollywood was in its heyday. Big pictures like Gone with the Wind and the
Wizard of Oz were served up. Movie Stars were untouchable, gorgeous beings –
beautifully lit, meticulously groomed. Not that the current generation isn't
also gorgeous and well-lit. They are.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The thing that separates today’s movie stars from Hollywood's

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today there's a glut of self promotion on social
media from stars who can't get enough attention. We see ALL aspects of their
lives. They're everywhere we look. Twitter. WhoSay. Facebook. Snapchat. Blogs.
You name it. It's how we all communicate. It makes the world smaller. It makes
stars accessible. It also overexposes them.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today, anyone can write a script, shoot a movie on
iphone, and slap it on youtube or vimeo or a plethora of other sites. There’s
an oversaturation.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hollywood had its bright and shining moment – a
sparkling beacon of grand cinematic wonder. But those days are over. The rest
of the world doesn't need or even want to shoot movies in Hollywood. At the
last American Film Market more than one notable Hollywood producer who spoke on the finance
panel admitted to shooting 8 of their 10 movies outside of LA. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Why? Because it's cheaper. And infrastructure and
incentives have popped up all over the map.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hollywood had a great run – and it's not dead yet. It
may remain a hub of history and archives for movies. But it will never be what
it used to be. The newness and wonder are gone. We are a world that understands
the gimmicks behind the magic and can make a flash-in-the-pan "star"
out of a pimpled youtube teen with a drumbeat machine.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">From my archives</span> <br />
<br />
I am at the American Film Market. I'm surrounded by sun-kissed actors and
models, producers and writers, movers and shakers. But you can spot me easily
as I'm the one with chalk-stick legs, no Botox, and still wearing a teen-charm
bra at this age. I dabble in the glamorous and colorful industry of
movies. But I am not a glamorous or colorful woman by industry standards. It's
the humiliating adventures that add a little color to my life. <br />
<br />
Years ago when I ventured into Hollywood for my first screenwriting seminar and
networking party I promised my mom that I would do her proud.
I would NOT dress like a tomboy. I would stuff my size 8-and-a-halfers into a
pair of killer heels. I would glide on the lip gloss. I would sweep on the eye
shadow. And to top it off I would even wear fake press-on nails at my
mother's request. "We don't want you looking like a corn-pone in the big
city!" she said.<br />
<br />
I decked myself out in all the glimmers, shimmers,
potions and lacquers you can imagine. Suit? Smart. Hair? Not horrific. And my
fingers sported 10 glossy, coral-colored press-on nails. Babs would have
been proud. <br />
<br />
After mingling with the crowd for an hour I found myself near the hors douvres
table where a large butter sculpture of a swan swam on a bed of lettuce. Tiny
goldfish crackers were sprinkled around the swan like confetti. (I don't get it
either. I was hoping that if I shared that image someone might shed some light
on what <i>that</i> was all about.)<br />
<br />
Standing next to the swan was a rather
unassuming looking man. Bespectacled. Nervous. Quiet. I introduced myself
thinking he was just another overwhelmed screenwriter from out of
town. After a few comments about the butter swan and scarfing down a couple
handfuls of goldfish crackers he invited me to pitch my scripts. I had met my first producer!<br />
<br />
And I had a mouth full of goldfish mush embedded
in my gums. <br />
<br />
A quick swig of Sprite and I was ready to go. I pitched the first five scripts
I had written. He hated them. Then I pitched a swing-era script I didn't think
would fly. He loved it. He asked many questions about the story, the
characters, the budget. This guy was really into it! <br />
<br />
I smoothed back my hair so it would have a little extra bounce during our conversation.
That's when my hand – with all those lovely coral-colored press-on nails – got
caught in my hair. I couldn't yank it free. Somehow, my hair had gotten twisted
around the fake nails right in the middle of my captivating pitch. I mean – he<i>
looked</i> captivated. (In retrospect, perhaps he was captivated with my
dilemma and not my script.)<br />
<br />
I didn't miss a beat as I yanked my hand as hard as
I could. It came free. Much relief! Until I glanced down and noticed that two
of the fake nails were missing from my carefully self-manicured hand. I
casually touched my hair during the rest of our conversation. In fact, I
touched it a lot, but I couldn't find the lost nails anywhere.<br />
<br />
After we exchanged contact information, I dashed off to the ladies room and
looked in the mirror. Hanging in two brilliant clumps were my fake coral nails.
I had to cut them out when I got back to my motel. Thank you, God. Thank you very much.<br />
<br />
This was my introduction
into the world of moviemaking. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqlQwuuG9uumF-MqzCiK4WLwJ0vi0_qX2VA4aulm_tm4dkHJT9C1hXNSfqu0vKUwhPh995EmhT4HlBM-h-MPJ33H5azCnDUI4d9cVlHxEahu401uhHQQ0-AODy0zxtf-CAnSENjBpXVxA/s1600/beach+1930.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqlQwuuG9uumF-MqzCiK4WLwJ0vi0_qX2VA4aulm_tm4dkHJT9C1hXNSfqu0vKUwhPh995EmhT4HlBM-h-MPJ33H5azCnDUI4d9cVlHxEahu401uhHQQ0-AODy0zxtf-CAnSENjBpXVxA/s1600/beach+1930.jpg" width="400" /></a>I have been in the periphery of the business as an indie screenwriter and
producer for over 10 years now and you'd think it would be bit easier for me to
develop class and poise when I take a meeting or give a presentation. I am
always the one at the table with food in my teeth (I actually <i>eat</i> at
these lunches). </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My producing partner, who is
rather young and rather hot (if you have tweeny daughters his Tiger Beat or
Popstar fold-out posters might still be taped to their walls), enjoys harping
on me to try dazzle it up a bit – to at least use an eyelash curler so my eyes
will POP. But given my past record I fear I would rip out my eyelashes during
some crazy mishap while curling them. A sneeze perhaps. Or maybe an earthquake.<br />
<br />
So I go about my life in a glam biz with poker-straight eye-lashes and chronic
red test-rabbit eyes – which is probably the only colorful thing about
me. Lord knows I try. (We won't talk in great detail about the mishap with the
bikini-line hair removal wax that I accidentally dropped onto my ... ahem … <i>woman</i>
hairs down there. I had to give myself an impromptu haircut. It looked like a
bad topiary job when I was through. Such is life and the cruelty of
beauty.) <br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more misadventures of a Cowtowner in Hollywood.</div>

In other news, <a href="http://www.prettyegg.org/files/ONE_SHEET_RAINING_CATS_102013.pdf">Raining Cats</a> is currently a semi-finalist in the Screen Craft competition. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was also hired to pen a 5-hanky, tear-jerker screenplay. This will be an adaptation from a book. The producer hopes to tap into the Lifetime and Hallmark crowds with this one, so we'll see how that pans out. <span style="color: #073763;">(My sugary-sweet script for Raining Cats was too brutal for Hallmark, so this one will be doused in sweetness with a cherry on top. Can I do it?? Can I be that nice?? I'm posting pics of bunny rabbit cakes so think I have it in me.)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also in development on the thriller Blood Land w a company who has not yet made a public announcement. We're taking a perfectly solid script that placed in the 2013 Nicholl fellowship quarter-finals and adding baby animals, super-hot car chases, a Chinese-American mafia, Russian American mafia -- and the sexy American who ends up saving the day. It's typical Hollywood. And I'm selling out to get a toe in the door. If you would have asked me to do this to my scripts just 10 years ago I would have stood my ground and fought for originality and integrity. But I'm 10 years older, 10 times more jaded and need naps. You will find me slicing and dicing well into the witching hour for the next several weeks. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If I were writing this on paper you would see my tear stains. But let me lick my wounds and enjoy being jaded. </div>
